karaoke in Japan

Far from the American bars filled with people getting on stage performing before countless strangers, Japan makes things a little more personal. The Karaoke scene in Nagoya, Japan consists of any number of friends reserving a private room to sing just around people they know.

Two of the main places in Nagoya are, “Joy Sound” and “Joy Joy.” Joy Sound not only lets you have a private room for you and your company, for 400 yen an hour, but for a little more money you can get all you can drink and all you can eat ice cream.

The rooms are large and cushioned chairs line the walls as surround sound hangs from the ceilings. A small hand-held device gets passed around letting anyone reserve their own song. Multiple microphones can be given out and the singing can happen just from where you happen to be seated.
